What causes skin aging? (And the steps to reverse it!)
Posted on 07 October 2019
Wrinkles, fine lines, age spots – we may not all admit it, but these things cause panic.
We’re fearful that our youthful glow will fade away and the signs of aging are starting to get visible.
Skin aging is inevitable, but did you know that there are factors in our daily lives that can speed up the process?
Here are a few factors that contribute to premature aging:
1. You have a poor diet
Your food intake plays a significant role in your skin’s health. If you’re eating a lot of junk, that will be reflected in your appearance. Furthermore, if you’re repeatedly gaining and losing weight (yo-yo dieting), your skin can continuously stretch and contract, damaging the elasticity of your skin. Additionally, if you have a sweet tooth, it can take a toll on your skin, as well. Having too much sugar in your systems causes loss of radiance, puffiness, dark circles, and even fine lines. If you want to delay skin aging as much as possible, you may want to pass on the sweets.
2. You are a frequent flyer.
The sun’s ultraviolet rays are much more intense at high altitudes. That’s why when you’re on a plane, you’ll get more harmful UV exposure that damages your skin. If you combine that with the low humidity and the bacteria in the recycled air, it’s not hard to see how flying can do your skin harm. And if you’re flying all the time, this damage will easily add up, causing premature aging.
3. You are not getting enough sleep.
A sleepless night is the number one culprit for those pesky eye bags! But those are not the only adverse effects of not having enough sleep. When you spend your nights working or binge-watching your favorite series, your skin will be losing moisture, which will lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Because your skin is becoming dry, you’ll look less youthful, and you will have less of a glow.
4. You are not exercising.
Studies show that sitting too much ages you by eight years. Yes, eight years! A sedentary lifestyle leads to accelerated aging, and it can lead to something much worse: kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity.
5. You’re not drinking enough water.
Your body loses water every day, and when it feels dehydrated, it pulls water from other parts of your body. That includes your skin. And when our skin loses moisture, it can cause premature signs of aging. Furthermore, not drinking enough water can irritate your skin and even alter its tone.
We all know skin aging is a part of life. We may not be able to prevent it, but there are things you can do to make sure you age gracefully.
Here are small changes you can incorporate in your daily routine so you can reverse premature skin aging:
The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin whether you’re at the beach or inside your house, so it’s essential to stay protected all the time. Applying sunscreen every day is a must if you want to have youthful and radiant skin.
2. Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help prevent premature skin aging. The vitamins and nutrients from a healthy diet will help maintain the glow of your youthful skin. Fruits like mangoes and watermelon and vegetables like spinach are rich in Vitamin A that help repair your skin cells.
3. Cut coffee, soda, and alcohol
Instead of these three, drink plenty of water instead! Coffee and soda can cause redness and dull skin, which makes you look older. A lot of people have already told you this, but you should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Try doing this, and you will see drastic changes in your skin. You will have lighter under eyes, more radiant complexion, and healthier skin!.
4. Work out at least three times a week
Studies have shown that when you work out, it improves your body’s blood circulation, and it boosts your immune system. This will give your skin a more youthful appearance.
5. Take time to relax and de-stress
Know your body and know when you need to get some rest. Working too much makes us exceed healthy stress levels, and it is becoming detrimental not only to your skin but to our overall health. Make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep and be sure to rest when needed. Take a vacation, do yoga and meditation, or cleanse away the toxins in your body. You must take care of your mental well-being as much as the physical because it will reflect in your skin’s appearance too!
6. Invest in the best anti-aging products
The Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone Age Reversing Line Wrinkle Cream is designed for normal to combination skin. It helps rewind the first signs of aging and boosts the skin’s elasticity to reverse your lines and wrinkles.
For extra anti-aging benefits, you also need to have a serum. Our favorite is the Yonka Age Correction Advanced Optimizer Serum. This luxurious formula lifts and firms your skin for a more youthful appearance. It revitalizes the skin as it smoothens your lines and infuses moisture and glow to your skin.
For optimal results, don’t forget to target your eyes. The skin around your eyes is the most sensitive part of your face, so be sure to use the Clinique All About Eyes Rich. This product de-puffs your eyes and diminishes the appearance of dark under eyes. It can even be used before makeup.
